This is the most popular university for freshers in 2016

As the UCAS application deadline approaches, research has identified the UK universities that are the most sought after by students looking to start their degrees in 2016.

And although they’re famous for being competitive and receiving a huge amount of applications, it doesn’t look like Oxford or Cambridge are the universities of choice for current sixth formers.

Instead, it’s sporty Loughborough that comes out top.

Based on its regular high ranking in student satisfaction league tables, it’s not hard to see why.

The data was compiled by Whatuni.com, from data submitted by over 8,100 sixth formers through its “Final 5” tool.

Loughborough is closely followed by the universities of Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, and Surrey.

Whilst Loughborough was most likely to be selected as a number one choice, Nottingham was the most named university overall, and was the most selected second and third choice for future students.

Emma Leech, Director of Marketing and Advancement at Loughborough University, said: “This has been a brilliant year for Loughborough. We’ve seen our league table positions climb and a number of awards that we have won this year, including the WUSCAS, have helped put us in the spotlight.

She adds: “The Loughborough community is amazing. The energy and commitment of our staff and students, together with our unique partnership with the Students’ Union, is at the heart of everything we do and we are absolutely delighted to rank so highly.”

The top 10 most popular first choice universities are…

1. Loughborough University

4. University of Nottingham
5. University of Surrey
6. King’s College London, University of London
