Water Treatment Team

Job Description
The Water Treatment Team is running projects looking at better ways of treating drinking water, adapting our existing treatment processes to comply with new legislation and assisting the Operations team with current challenges affecting the treatment plants. The team operates a number of pilot scale water treatment processes in West London and also works across the Thames Water region.

This is a many faceted role which will see the successful candidate working with recognized experts on projects of real relevance to the water industry. The work includes installation, demonstration and monitoring of pilot plants, working on operational sites, designing and carrying out experiments and the development of new technology. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the management of sampling programmes including maintaining databases and sample archives plus turning the data into information which will guide the business. The candidate will get involved in data manipulation, feasibility studies, literature reviews and the completion of technical reports.

There will also be the opportunity to work with all levels of the company from front line operations staff through to senior managers. These are our project sponsors and clients. This placement offers the opportunity for the student to become a fully contributing member of the team for instance you may participate in formal and informal meetings, give presentations, supervise third parties carrying out key tasks and liaise with technical experts both internally and external to Thames Water.

The students will be expected to manage their own time and tasks, and will be responsible for reporting progress to supervisors. The work involves all aspects of being part of a dynamic team and involves working in an office environment and outside in all weather conditions managing the pilot plants.

Person Requirements
Education & Knowledge
* The role is open to undergraduate students who are looking to carry out a year-in-industry or Professional Training Year as part of a relevant degree
* You should be studying a STEM subject and be interested in how different disciplines interact in the water treatment environment. Suitable subjects include: mechanical engineering, civil engineering, process engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science or other natural science
* Should be working towards 2:1 (minimum requirement)
* An interest in the water industry (Desirable)
* Detailed knowledge of this field of work (would be an advantage but not essential)
* Previous relevant working experience (would be an advantage but not essential)
* Personal achievements relevant to this position (would be an advantage but not essential)

General
* Candidates should have a high standard of oral and written communication skills (English language)
* Good numeracy skills
* Competent with word, excel and other standard software packages
* A full UK driving licence
* Good problem solving skills
* Sense of humour
* We expect a high level of initiative and self-motivation and a willingness to join the team in working some unsociable hours as the need arises. After training you should be prepared to work safely with minimal supervision and be able to work within a team structure to deliver project milestones in a safe and timely manner.
