Industry Spotlight: Interview with Interactive Designer at boohoo.com

 In Interview Tips, Job Searching

Stylefix is boohoo.com’s magazine which has recently been launched digitally. We recently interviewed Ross Mackay, Interactive Designer at boohoo.com. Ross designs Stylefix and tells us why he love his job. He also gives us advice to anyone wanting to follow in his footsteps in the fashion industry.

Q. Ross, what’s a typical day for you?
A. I begin my day with checking emails and then research design blogs for inspiration. I always like to visually wake myself up in the morning and see what new stuff is out there, I think that’s really important.

I then look through my plan of what articles need to be designed for the upcoming issue release. I usually put pen to paper first rather than pixel to picture, that usually helps me get my ideas out quicker and sculpts the overall vision.

Once I’ve finished sketching the image I make the image come to life on the computer.

Q. What distinct features does the app hold?
A. The boohoo.com digital Stylefix has made the reading experience more interactive and engaging for the user. It’s filled with exclusive video content and products in 360 degree rotations. Buttons to our social media are placed throughout the magazine so users can easily access it and join in the conversation.

Q. What do you love most about your job?
A. Every day is different. I usually have to design 30 or more pages for the digital magazine for each issue and they each take on their own design and thought process. I enjoy being able to work closely with photographers and videographers so the ideas can become real. It is really rewarding when you can see the end result.

Q. What has been the best moment of your career so far?
A. Redesigning boohoo’s Stylefix magazine for mobiles and seeing the Stylefix App released was a proud and great moment for me. Knowing that the magazine you designed is being downloaded and used by thousands is a great feeling and it’s going to be something that’s hard to beat.

Q. Have you got any advice for people who want to get into either fashion or design?
A. Make a good portfolio with all your strongest work and tailor it to the particular companies you are interested in working for. An online presence is also a must, make sure you have a website or a blog and continuously update it with your latest work

Jobs are now being advertised on social sites like Twitter and LinkedIn so follow the companies you want to work for to find out when they’re hiring. And lastly, make sure you grow as a designer, design everything you do and try to learn as much as you can. The more rounded you are the better.
