A career in copywriting is a fantastic way to take the skills learned from an English, Journalism or Creative Writing degree and apply them in an online or offline environment. We spoke to Alex from The Entertainer<\/a> about his current role and how his university experience helped prepare him for it.<\/p>\n

What did you study at university and what impact did it have on your career path?<\/strong>
\nI studied English Literature and Journalism. Both subjects rely heavily on writing, punctuation and sticking to deadlines \u2013 things that provide a good foundation for a career in copywriting.<\/p>\n

What work experience did you undertake per landing a permanent position?<\/strong>
\nI did placements at various newspapers whilst completing my journalism degree.<\/p>\n

Did you take part in any societies while at university, and if so, did you learn any valuable skills from your time?<\/strong>
\nI used to write for the student newspaper. It\u2019s something I\u2019d definitely recommend if you\u2019re interested in a career that involves a lot of creative writing.<\/p>\n

What advice do you have for those who are just starting university right now?<\/strong>
\nDo a subject you will enjoy. It sounds obvious but you\u2019ll be amazed at the number of people who drop out because they chose something they hated. Also, try not to procrastinate too much. The last thing you want is starting a 15,000 word essay the day before a deadline when you\u2019ve had all term to do it!<\/p>\n

How important is a brand\u2019s culture when choosing positions to apply for?<\/strong>
\nVery important. You spend more time at work than with family and friends so it\u2019s got to be an environment that will get the best out of you.<\/p>\n

What is the most challenging part of your current role?<\/strong>
\nJuggling all the different projects and making sure everything\u2019s done before the deadlines.<\/p>\n

Has your role changed, or have your responsibilities evolved, as you\u2019ve worked for The Entertainer?<\/strong>
\nYes it has. I was initially just in charge of the website copy but now help with social media, catalogues and other copywriting projects.<\/p>\n

With the growth of digital marketing, copywriting is evidently now more diverse than ever before. Roles like Alex\u2019s are widely available, and there\u2019s lots that current students can do to prepare themselves for a career in this area.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
