If you are searching for an international internship experience, the Mountbatten Institute offers a unique opportunity for recent graduates to gain one year’s PAID work experience in one of many top New York companies while earning a Postgraduate Certificate or MBA in International Business Practice.

The Institute’s multifaceted and renowned global exchange has provided paid internships abroad combined with academic study to thousands of young professionals since its founding in 1984.  Participants come away with personal, professional and academic experiences that can change the course of a lifetime, including international hands-on corporate training, life in the financial capital of New York City, a worldwide network of peers and an academic qualification that significantly broadens a young professional’s field of opportunity.

The Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice is awarded by St. Mary’s University College, London and is taught on evenings and weekends. A full MBA option is also available, which includes a four-month field-work experience in Bangkok following the internship year in New York.

The Work Placement
Programme participants are placed with one of our many premier Sponsor Companies ranging from multinational giants (JP Morgan Chase, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, UBS) to smaller companies including hedge funds, law firms, marketing agencies and post-production studios.

The 75+ Sponsor Companies we work with are selected due to the diversity of their operations and their commitment to intercultural exchange and experiential education. The large majority of our roles are within large financial services firms and we require driven, talented professionals to fill the roles we have available in March and August each year.

Participants work full-time for their Sponsor Company for the full 12 months. Work placements are intensive, fast paced and the environment is frequently dynamic and pressurized. The benefit of this is that interns develop skills quickly and are encouraged to hit the ground running from day one. Interns gain priceless exposure to senior management and gain insight into their preferred industry.

Employers and recruitment consultancies often praise Mountbatten alumni for their high calibre skills and professional maturity. Indeed, interns leave New York on successful completion of their internship as highly marketable products and with a wealth of experience to impress any interviewer with.

The Course
The MBA and Postgraduate Certificate ask you to take an international perspective and understand the ways in which your work placement operates within a global economy. In an interdependent world where cross-cultural understanding is essential at all levels of operations and management, the academic programmes give you the practical skills and knowledge to appreciate the interactions of international business. The educational philosophy underlying the Mountbatten MBA and PGC is known as ‘experiential education’. When you complete your qualification, your work placement in New York becomes part of the educational process, as you learn to relate your classroom assignments to real life, professional situations. In addition to the knowledge base that you will develop in New York, if you pursue the MBA you will be challenged as you complete your degree outside your comfort zone, with a term of intensive fieldwork and regional study in Bangkok, Thailand.

Living in New York
There are few better ways to broaden your horizons and develop your cross-cultural understanding than spending a year immersed in a city as culturally, ethnically and socially diverse as New York. The most populous city in the US is a hub for international business and the beating heart of the world’s economy. It is famous for its sports teams – The Knicks, The Mets, The Giants and The Yankees; its skyline – the magnificent Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and Chrysler Building; its culture – the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Lincoln Centre and Broadway and it’s five boroughs brimming with a diverse selection of ethnic pockets such as Little Italy, Harlem and China Town – each with its own culture and identity.

Outside of work and study, interns keep themselves busy with an array of extra-curricular opportunities open to them. Many participate in rugby and football leagues throughout the city while others have successfully completed the New York Marathon. Lots volunteer their time to various charity initiatives, such as coaching soccer to kids in the Bronx, mentoring young immigrants to help them sit their SATs or helping out in homeless shelters. It’s not all about New York either – interns have travelled to all corners of the US and beyond – some particular highlights included meeting Michelle Obama during a guided tour of the White House, watching some Formula 1 in Montreal and taking a cruise to The Bahamas.
