Community By Design

Job Information
This role offers interns a unique opportunity to join a small multidisciplinary team and gain 360-degree experience of a functioning organic circular economy model, which revolves around sustainable food waste management, urban food production and food preparation. A feature of the model is the use of micro anaerobic digestion, which turns food waste into renewable biogas and fertiliser to close the food-waste-energy loop.

What the job entails

* Plant propagation, maintenance and harvesting
* Monitoring urban agriculture trials
* Food waste collections
* Operation, monitoring and maintenance of the anaerobic digesters (AD)
* Food preparation
* Communicating about the closed-loop cycle
* Assembling a micro anaerobic digestion system
* Assembling food growing infrastructure
* Supporting marketing activities

Benefits

Interns will benefit from learning a wide range of practical skills as well as the theory associated with circular resource management, community enterprise initiatives, renewable energy systems, anaerobic digestion, sustainable waste management and urban food production systems, and health and safety issues.

By being involved in the complete food-waste-energy cycle, interns will gain an appreciation of the interdependent elements of a system, learn to think across sectors and disciplines, and become equipped with transferable skills. Understanding the wider picture will help interns make more informed choices about their future direction.
